Fall Car Care Tips

Brought to You by Century Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram

When the weather turns, the temperatures start to drop and the sun sets earlier and earlier, it is a great indication it is time to give your vehicle a check-up! Fall and winter can bring a number of driving conditions you have not experienced in quite a few months like slippery roads and bad visibility. This is why it is important to make sure that your Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, or Ram model is ready for it while you get back into the swing of things! Did you know that preventative vehicle maintenance is one of the most important things you can do for yourself and your vehicle? We are going to go over some of these maintenance tasks and tips and how we can help you tackle them at our service department, so keep reading below!

Fall Mainteance Tasks

Infrequent Vehicle Use: Are you the type that heads south for the winter and leaves your vehicle behind? Or perhaps you are the type that hides away to avoid the coldest part of the winter? No matter which category you fall into, chances are your vehicle is not going to be used as it normally would or should be. We suggest, to maintain the battery life, you should start your vehicle at least once a week and let it run for at least 15 minutes. It would be even better if you drove it around town for at least 15 minutes! In addition to helping the battery, this also helps to avoid brake rotor dust and flat spots on the tires.

Tires: Speaking of the tires, these are impacted by fall and winter weather a lot! The extreme temperature fluctuations that we experience, especially in the fall, throughout the day can affect the air pressure of your tires. It is important to keep a good eye on them and physically check the air pressure often to ensure they are properly inflated. You should also check the tire treads while you are monitoring the air pressure to ensure that you will have optimum traction during the rainy and snowy weather ahead.

Battery: We briefly touched on the battery above when talking about infrequent vehicle use during the colder months, but it's important to check on it before the cold weather fully sets in. The summer’s harsh heat can do some real damage to your vehicle’s battery and its lifespan which can lead to it failing during the fall and winter months. You do not want to be stuck on the side of a poorly plowed road with a dead battery! Now is a great time to check your battery for any damage or corrosion and replace it if needed.

Wiper Blades: With fall and winter, come wet weather! The rain starts to come down causing leaves to fall and then it quickly switches to slush and snow before we know it. It is important that your wiper blades are in good working order to effectively clean your windshield for optimum visibility. If you notice any cracks or tears, this is a great time to swap them out for some new blades. Generally, we suggest getting new blades every six months.
